Haled Masha'l is a smart chap. In one of his speeches (in this video), he summarizes what the west is facing with global jihad:

"Today, you are fighting the army of Allah,
you are fighting against people for whom death for the sake of Allah,
and for the sake of honor and glory,
is preferable to life."

I think that we should listen.
